In August 2017 I returned to FPWM after graduating in Accounting and Law. Upon returning, I was struck by how different academic life was compared to a working life- which took a bit of getting used to again! It is safe to say, I love my new working life and cannot imagine myself back in the world of academia.

I was thrown back in the deep end and have been involved in all aspects of work at FPWM, including report writing, reviews, fund analysis as well as doing my best to contribute to the friendly and open working atmosphere.  We take our work very seriously, but that doesn’t mean we have to be serious all the time! I have thoroughly enjoyed all the aspects of work so far, particularly when my work goes towards helping our clients solve their financial problems.

Whilst being back I have been fortunate enough to attend many conferences, seminars and meetings. These have been hosted by a range of different fund houses, the PFS and other organisations within the industry. These have helped to broaden my knowledge of financial services, technical products and build on my soft skills.

I have also been working towards my Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning which is the qualification required to provide regulated financial advice. I am currently awaiting my results for the final exam of the diploma (I have all my fingers crossed) and with any luck I will gain a few more letters after my name! The knowledge gained from (hopefully) completing the diploma is one of the key building blocks of my ultimate goal – advising clients as part of the FPWM team.

We are also part of the “Future of Advice” scheme which is an initiative that is designed to increase awareness of careers in financial services, and specifically financial advice. I am really enthusiastic about this initiative and pleased to be able to do my bit to raise awareness through Careers talks at BU and being part of a Panel at the Q3 PFS Regional Conference. I am excited to see the impact it will have on the industry. It will be great to see more young people following this career path and especially more female faces in the industry.

Thanks FPWM, I’ve had a great first year as a graduate
